Bonjour! Ciao! Hello!
When I started planning my wedding, every wedding planner I spoke to told me the same thing: two languages is manageable, but three? Impossible.
But my husband and I are both stubborn and we were determined to make it work. So I set out on a mission to include all three languages into our day.
We got married in Provence, and our day was a beautiful blend of French, Italian, and English. French for my side of the family – like my Mamies, my grandmothers, who were 89 and 92 at the time and don’t speak a word of English. Italian for my husband and his family and friends. And English for the friends who’ve become our family, here in the US and across the world.
I won’t pretend it was easy. Finding the balance between the three languages was delicate and finding an officiant who spoke all three was hard. But not impossible. In fact, it was worth every extra headache because we ended up with a wedding that was a true reflection of us and our story.
Best of all, we made our big day feel special for our family and friends too. My favorite moment? Watching one of my French cousins (who barely speaks English) take shots with our English-speaking friends, laughing together like they’d known each other for years. Especially after a few drinks, believe me, language was no longer a barrier!
