Hello! Bonjour! Ciao!
Hi, I’m Marion—and while I’m not fully trilingual, my wedding was! I recently got married in the region of Provence in France and our big day blended French, Italian, and English. Here’s how that happened:
I’m from France so French was a must, especially for my grandmas and relatives who don’t speak a word of English. My husband is Italian, and his family only speaks Italian, so naturally we had to include that too. And because we live in the US, most of our friends speak English. Our friends are our family away from home so including English was just as important to us to make them feel included. To top it off, plenty of Spanish-speaking friends joined us too—so let’s just say our wedding was quite international. In fact, our guests came from more than 14 different countries!
When I first started planning, every wedding planner I spoke to told me that two languages was manageable, but three? Impossible. But my husband and I are both stubborn and we were determined to honor both of our families and make sure our friends felt included. So I set out on a mission to include all three languages into our day.
I’m not going to sugarcoat it, finding the balance between the three languages was delicate and finding an officiant who spoke all three was hard. But not impossible. In fact, the extra headaches and planning was worth it. We managed to make all of our guests feel included, and most importantly, we had a wedding that was a true reflection of our story.
One of my favorite memories from that day was seeing everyone mix and mingle across languages. Especially after a few drinks, believe me language was no longer a barrier! I’ll never forget seeing one of my French cousins (who barely spoke English) taking shots with our English-speaking friends, laughing, and celebrating like they had known each other forever. It was magical.
So, whether your wedding is as international as mine or you’re blending two languages or cultures, you’ve come to the right place. Bilingual Brides is here to help you plan a wedding that reflects your love story while giving your guests an unforgettable experience—because their experience is part of the magic too.
